are we going back to masks? Here are the new rules

Introduction

The increase in COVID-19 infections in the United States is putting health systems nationwide on alert. Anti-contagion prescriptions are reinstated in America following the surge in cases of positivity to the Pirola variant. In Europe, Italy is the second country for the number of new positives, i.e. 26,998. The Government publishes new rules of conduct, not particularly restrictive, but containment, considering the consequences recorded on those affected, which have proven to be lighter than in the past.

In this paragraph, we will answer the most common questions at the moment, depending on the increase in infections and the rules of conduct contained in the circular drawn up by the Prevention Directorate of the Ministry of Health, after the publication of the decree law in the Official Gazette.

Should those who are positive for COVID-19 observe a period of isolation? No, as specified by the Ministry’s circular, if you test positive in a molecular or antigen test, it is “recommended to wear a respiratory protection device (surgical mask or Ffp2) if you come into contact with other people. symptomatic, stay at home until symptoms subside.

How to behave outside the home? First of all, apply correct hand hygiene and avoid crowded environments.

What to do in case of contact with a positive person? For people who have come into contact with cases of COVID-19, it is “recommended that they pay attention to the possible appearance of symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 (fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness) in the days immediately following the contact”. And during these days “it is advisable for the person to avoid contact with fragile people, immunosuppressed people, pregnant women.

When is it necessary to take a swab? In case of symptoms that can lead to Covid-19, and there has been contact with a positive person, it is recommended to carry out an antigen test, even self-administered, or molecular.

The epidemiological trend in Italy: Infections are increasing

Covid cases are constantly increasing from 31 July to 27 August 2023. Italy, in particular, is the second country in terms of number of infections, i.e. 26,998, +81% compared to the previous 4 weeks. These are the data highlighted in the epidemiological report of the World Health Organization. The two most widespread variants currently are EG.5, renamed Eris, which now represents 26.2% of cases, and XBB, against which the European Medicines Agency (EMA) will give the green light for the vaccine to be administered during autumn-winter.

Mask yes or no?

In particularly crowded places or in the presence of elderly, fragile, or immunosuppressed subjects, it is always advisable to wear an airway protection device or maintain a certain distance. This is the advice of the experts. However, in Italy, there is no longer any obligation to wear a mask. With the exception of Lombardy where a circular is already active requiring the use of masks – preferably Ffp2 type – in hospitals and RSAs for operators and visitors.
